South Texas Critters and Pest Control

South Texas Critters

South Texas is notorious for its hot, and depending on which day you visit, humid or dry climate makes it the perfect home for all kinds of nasty critters. If you’re not from South Texas, a few of the critters (we would say insects, but two of the three are not technically insects) may be new to you – and can be a bit of a shock for those not accustomed to them. So let’s look at the three that top every out-of-towners list.

Fire Ants

Fire ants are tiny, reddish-brown ants that create large underground colonies in lawns and gardens. They are known for their painful bites and can cause severe allergic reactions in some people. In addition, fire ants are attracted to moisture, so they are commonly found near sprinkler heads, hoses, and air conditioning units.

Scorpions

Scorpions are nocturnal arachnids with distinctive curved tails and pincers. They are attracted to warm and dry environments, such as attics, basements, and crawl spaces, and can be found hiding in shoes, piles of clothing, and boxes. Their sting is painful and can sometimes be deadly, especially to the elderly and young children.

Centipedes

Centipedes are long, flat-bodied arthropods with many legs. They can grow up to several inches in length and are commonly found in dark and damp areas of the house, such as basements and bathrooms. While their bite is not usually harmful, it can be painful and cause swelling.

All of these pests are attracted to our yards and homes because of the abundance of food and shelter. They can cause significant damage if unchecked, including structural damage, electrical fires, and health hazards. Their presence is also a nuisance that can cause anxiety and stress.

Pest Control

The key to controlling these pests is prevention. This includes good sanitation practices, such as wiping up spills, regularly removing trash, and eliminating standing water. In addition, sealing all cracks and gaps in windows, doors, and the house’s foundation is essential to prevent pests from entering.

There are natural and safe control methods for those dealing with an infestation. These include using citrus peels or vinegar to repel ants, cedar oil to repel scorpions, and diatomaceous earth to kill centipedes. It is also possible to hire a professional pest control service to take care of the problem.

Creating a custom pest management plan focusing on prevention, monitoring, and control is the best way to stay on top of pest issues. However, seeking professional assistance is also important if the infestation seems too overwhelming.

South Texas is home to a variety of pesky critters that can cause significant damage if not dealt with correctly. Prevention is the key to control, and many natural and safe methods of repelling and killing pests exist. Remember to practice good sanitation, seal all cracks and gaps, and seek professional assistance if necessary.
